On August 3, 2003, while on the Greensprings Road, at mile post five near Emigrant Lake, training for a bicycle race Michael was struck head-on by a motorist who crossed into his lane. Michael went through the windshield of the car. His left leg was shattered. His collar bone and fourteen ribs were broken. Worst of all, his spine was damaged to the point that he is now confined to a wheelchair.
